Is Vaginal Burning Caused By An STD?
If your vagina burns, there are a number of things that could be causing it. That’s why it is important to identify whether you have an STD, an STI, or contact dermatitis. Vaginal burning is an unusual and abnormal stinging or burning that occurs most often during urination. The irritation most often comes from lesions that make contact with warm, acidic, urine. There are a number of STDs with symptoms that include vaginal irritation, however, there are also a number of products and irritants that could cause similar, if not identical, burnings.
Is it an STD or am I just Irritated?
Certain things like perfumes, articles of clothing, and menstrual items could come in contact and irritate the skin in your pelvic regions. Before jumping to any conclusions, be sure to think of any new items you’ve been using and if you might have had any type of adverse reaction from its presence. Non-STD transmitted irritation could come from contact with condoms, rough toilet paper, a UTI, bacterial vaginosis, or chemical irritation from a cream. After ruling everything out, it’s important to recognize whether or not it’s possible that you have contracted an STD or STI from any recent sexual partners.
Even though there are explainable reasons for your irritated pelvic regions, it’s important to stay aware of the possible STDs associated with vaginal burning. Here are a few:
Herpes Simplex 2 (HSV-2) – most commonly referred to as genital herpes, HSV-2 is the most common STD responsible for vaginal burning and irritation. During an outbreak, clusters of painful and small bumps accumulate and eventually burst with clear fluid. Even though most outbreaks result in warts on the outside of the vagina, lesions may also form on the inside of the vagina where they remain hidden from sight. The external lesions usually become painful when bodily fluids or clothing comes in contact with them, and internal lesions can burn whenever a tampon is inserted.
Gonorrhea & Chlamydia – These bacterial STDs are some of the first culprits when it comes to vaginal burning. As two of the most common STDs among women, they sometimes happen together in a ‘co-infection.’ Luckily, they can both be taken care of with an antibiotic.
Trichomoniasis – Commonly referred to as trich, this STD is caused by a protozoan parasite. It most often causes irritation and inflammation of the vaginal skin, this in turn causes vaginal burning.
